New Tudor Ranger 79950 is here! How Does It Compare To The Ranger 79910?

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the British North Greenland Expedition, Tudor just announced the launch of a brand new Ranger watch, complete with a case redesign, dial revamp, and new movement.

The new model is the Ranger ref. 79950 and it takes the place of the Ranger 79910, which was discontinued a few years back. This new Tudor release begs the question, what’s the difference between Ranger 79950 vs. Ranger 79910? Let’s find out, shall we?

Brief Tudor Ranger History

The British North Greenland Expedition was a scientific mission that started in 1952 and spanned two years. Hans Wilsdorf, Tudor’s founder, thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to test the then-new Oyster Prince watches, which were waterproof and automatic out in the field. So he equipped the expedition with Tudor Oyster Princes and requested the crew to report back on how the watches performed in the frigid and harsh conditions. As expected, the watches performed flawlessly.

Not too long after the expedition, Tudor developed the Ranger tool watch, which was aimed at adventures and characterized by a matt black dial with oversized Arabic numerals at 3, 6, 9, and 12. The Ranger appeared in Tudor catalogs, in various iterations, from the late-1960s until the late-1980s.

In 2014, Tudor revived the model in the form of the Heritage Ranger ref. 79910, which was directly inspired by a vintage 1967 Oyster Prince Ranger. The model was discontinued in 2020.

Tudor Ranger 79950 for 2022

Thankfully, Tudor has brought back its retro-style adventuring tool watch by introducing the brand new Ranger ref. 79950. The watch sports a 39mm stainless steel case, which is almost entirely satin-finished for that somber tool watch vibe. However, in a nice design touch, the outer bezel ring is polished. The case is water-resistant to 100 meters or 330 feet and topped with a domed and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

The matt black dial of the 79950 retains that signature Ranger style, including those must-have 3-6-9-12 numerals and arrow-style handset. Plus, to emphasize the vintage style of the watch, the hours and minute track are painted (rather than applied) in a beige-colored lume. The minimalist dial bears the RANGER name above 6 and the Tudor logo below 12.

Inside the case of the Ranger ref. 79950 is the COSC-certified in-house Tudor Caliber MT5402 automatic movement, with 70 hours of power reserve. Tudor has proudly stated that the new Ranger watch is the brand’s most affordable manufacture movement-powered watch in the current collection.

In true Tudor fashion, the Ranger 79950 comes with a choice of a steel bracelet, a hybrid textured leather rubber strap, or an olive green jacquard fabric strap. The steel bracelet, which is also satin finished like the case, benefits from Tudor’s T-Fit clasp that allows wearers to micro-adjust the bracelet in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8mm increments.

Ranger 79950 vs. 79910

If we place the 79950 and 79910 Tudor Ranger watches side-by-side, there are more than a few differences to note.

First of all, the discontinued Ranger ref. 79910 is larger with a 41mm case compared to the more compact 39mm diameter of the new Ranger ref. 79950. If we move to the dial, we see that the new Tudor Ranger includes the name of the model while the previous version does not—rather, that one has the “smiley” Rotor Self-Winding inscription. Furthermore, the dial of the 79910 includes the Tudor rose emblem whereas the 79950 has the Tudor shield logo. The handsets are also slightly different where the older reference includes a burgundy seconds hand and the newest reference only includes a burgundy tip on the seconds hand.

As for the band options, the previous Ranger 79910 came with the option of a brown leather bund strap, a camo Nato-style strap, a brown leather standard strap, or a stainless steel bracelet. Conversely, as mentioned, the fresh Ranger 79950 offers a fabric, leather/rubber, or steel band. However, more importantly, the steel bracelet fitted to the Ranger 79950 includes endlinks (the preceding version did not) for a seamless fit with the case and the addition of the T-Fit clasp.

Another major difference between the Ranger references 79910 and 79950 is the automatic movement that powers them—the former runs on an ETA 2824 movement with 38 hours of power reserve whilst the latter houses a manufacture movement with almost double the power reserve.
