Exploring The Omega Speedmaster Features Of The Past
October 16, 2019History of the Omega Speedmaster in the Mid-to-Late 1900’s
The Omega Speedmaster has a long history, more than 60 years to be exact. The first Speedmaster was crafted in 1957 at a time when chronographs were rare. As more and more individuals recognized the functionality behind the chronograph, the Omega Speedmaster grew in popularity. At first, this type of watch was worn by sports enthusiasts, doctors, and other individuals who needed the stopwatch aspect. Later in the 1970’s, the chronograph became more popular with the general watch wearing crowd.
In October 1962, the Omega Speedmaster 2998 made its way into space, thanks to Mercury Atlas 8 astronaut Wally Schirra wearing his personal timepiece. In the mid-to-late 1960’s, the Omega Speedmaster Reference 105.003 was created with thin white minute and hour hands that the Omega Speedmaster of today still retains. This time period was also the timeframe where a 38mm size was last used for the Omega Speedmaster.
Late 1960’s
In the late 1960’s, the Omega Speedmaster Reference 145.012 made its debut. This watch model was one worn by more astronauts than any other and possessed a 321 caliber. It may come as a surprise that this model was also the most affordable one.
The Omega Speedmaster that had the longest run was Reference 145.022 which was produced between 1969 and 1988. This watch model had a caliber 861 and 42mm case. The styles of this model watch would change through the years but would still keep its general form and main features.
