The History Of The Montblanc Meisterstuck Pens

The History Of The Montblanc Meisterstuck Pens

Over the years, Montblanc has retained its reputation in providing high-end writing instruments –and doubled their prices. Love it or hate it, you cannot deny the grace and recognition that the Montblanc brand holds today.

At Precisions Watches and Jewelry, if there is one thing that we are sure of it is this: Montblanc is not just a brand –it’s a statement. Many important people all over the world sign important documents, embedding their footsteps into the global history, with their Montblanc pens.

One of Montblanc’s classic writing instrument collections is the Meisterstruck, the name associating itself with the brand as early as fourteen years after Montblanc’s conception.

Fast forward ninety years and the Montblanc Meisterstruck collection of luxury products include pens, watches, jewelry, and leather goods –all of them making the company’s most significant and distinctive writing instruments.

However, it’s the Montblanc Meisterstruck Pens that have the oldest relationship with the Montblanc brand while the other accessories are a fairly recent incorporation.

A Brief History of the Meisterstuck Pens

Meisterstuck, the German word for ‘Masterpiece’, first appeared in the market in the form of Montblanc Pens. The very first Montblanc Meisterstuck Pen was produced in the 1920s and represented the company’s top-notch range of writing instruments.

At that point, the Montblanc company was referred to with their older namesake: Simplo. So, the Meisterstuck name has associated itself with the company before it even had the name that it is renowned for worldwide.

When the Meisterstuck Pens were produced, they were simply Safety Filling pens, representing the Montblanc Simplo Company’s high-end writing instrument accessories. These accessories included warranted nibs and incorporation of celluloid or pricey, more durable constructive metals –some higher-grade features that the previous models of the pens lacked.

The picture on the right reveals two Montblanc Meisterstuck Pushbuttonfiller No. 25 Models; in coral red and lapis blue. The black pen in the center is the Montblanc Meisterstuck Safetyfiller No. 35. All three pens have the signature enamel-based white star of the Montblanc company, standing prominently against the dark tops of their caps.

The Design of the Meisterstuck Pens Over the Decades

The post-war period, in which the Mesiterstuck Pens were launched in the market, affected many aspects of its construction and design. With customers asking for highly durable, high-value products at a pocket-friendly price, Montblanc had to make some design changes.

Here’s a timeline of the design metamorphosis of the Montblanc Mesiterstuck Pens

  • In the 1920s, the pens were bandless and only available in the black safetyfiller pen with models ranging from 20 to 45 –the model number was reflective of the price of each
  • In 1928, when cap bands and clips become a trend, the Meisterstuck Pens were released with the bands, but without the clips. However, you could still buy the clips for your Meisterstuck pen as an added accessory.
  • In 1929, Montblanc added the pushknobfiller; covering up for major disadvantages of the Parker pen’s pushbutton filling system.
  • In 1930, Montblanc designed the Meisterstuck pens with the clips attached permanently to the caps and introduced it to the market. The same year, Montblanc started carving the number 4810 onto the nib of each of their pens –this number is the height of a Montblanc mountain and added to every pen’s character.
  • In 1935, the designs became more sleek, flat, and cylindrical –right after the application of Art Deco. The flat captop and special clip are more renowned under the name ‘Hemingway Clip’ and for the first time in the history of the company, it showed the nib of the pens to be a duo-toned gold. Today, this double shade is a distinctive part of the Montblanc design.
  • In the 1950s, the pens underwent a drastic change in look: they became streamlined and were sold with three detachable caps as accessories. A feature is known as the ‘wing nib’, discreetly etched in the grip section of the pens, also became a characteristic of the brand.
  • Montblanc continued making the pens they had designed in the 1950s, discontinuing all the designs prior to it. With minor changes, the contemporary designs are still produced without interruptions.
  • By the 1970s, the Meisterstuck pens had added piston fillers and cartridge filters to their designs, as per the market and customer requirements.

The Modern Montblanc Meisterstuck Pens

Every object that leaves the Montblanc factory today is collectively dubbed as Meisterstuck or ‘Masterpiece’ –a well-deserved title considering how the brand name has maintained steady and high-quality for almost a century.

The modern Montblanc Meisterstuck pens differ exponentially in style, grip, and constructing materials but still manage to retain the defining features of the Mesiterstuck Pens.

  • An up-to-date filling system
  • A bigger, elegant and aesthetically pleasing gold nib
  • The signature, beautiful white Star

The Meisterstuck namesake, however, is not just associated with pens today; rather, it has extended itself to a wide range of accessories. Although the pens have been the key subject of the Mesiterstuck name, there is no telling what the continuously changing brand will adopt in the decades to come.
